In 2024, the EU Early Warning System (EWS) on New Psychoactive Substances (NPS) reached a major milestone with the formal notification of its 1000th substance, delta-9-THC-methylcarbonate. Established in 1997, the EWS remains a cornerstone in Europe’s efforts to monitor and respond to the dynamic and evolving NPS pheomenon.Recent data highlights the complexity of this challenge: 47 new substances were identified in 2024, including a range of emerging nitazene opioids and semi-synthetic cannabinoids
